a great deal more than an art break
Jonathan Mulvaney
June 15 - 20 Acrylics
Jonathan Mulvaney, our newest recruit to BIG SKY ART tutor team, has taught in art schools and private classes for many years; his relaxed style, positive approach and knowledge of his subject make him a popular and in demand teacher with both new and practised painters. At BIG SKY ART we are delighted to offer a course specifically on Acrylics for the first time, tutored by such a popular and renowned artist.
Jonathan started painting after a long career creating sculptures for public and private collections. He says:
‘On holiday in Scotland I came across a man painting a landscape in a remote part of the Isle of Lewis. After talking with him for while it struck me how truly creative his process was. Just him, his painting and the landscape – a real contrast to the frustrating complexities and politics of making public sculpture, where the creative element was somewhat limited by the interaction with logistics and interested parties’.
Immediately upon his return home Jonathan began to reduce the time spent sculpting, dedicating part of his studio to painting, and started to experiment with a variety of media on a variety of surfaces before settling on acrylic on board. Jon says: ‘Painting in the landscape whether it’s urban or rural consumes me now; it is direct, physical and exacting’.
Working in a free, impressionistic style Jonathan has exhibited widely at international art fairs as well as at selected exhibitions in the Southwest of England, including the Royal West of England Academy and the Victoria Art Gallery in Bath. In addition to his urban subjects and rural landscapes he has also received commissions for large murals from international retail company URBN.
